What is usually expected

Coaches are expected to receive mental health education materials from their school and to know how to refer an athlete through the department’s action plan. Your compliance and sports medicine staff can tell you exactly what applies to your role.

What is encouraged

Additional training, such as Mental Health First Aid or other coach education, is encouraged. It builds confidence for the conversations coaches already have every day.

Free NCAA resources

The NCAA Sport Science Institute publishes free mental health resources for coaches, athletes and administrators. Start there before paying for anything.

Where Emotional Fitness fits

Emotional Fitness is education. It gives coaches a framework and language for the whole athlete and complements, not replaces, the resources your school provides and the licensed professionals on your campus.

It depends on your division, state and school. Ask your compliance office; some states, such as California, are adding training rules.

Should I diagnose an athlete?

No. Listen, support and refer through your department’s action plan.
